Hike E - Pirate Tower at Es Vedra
This walk offers views of Es Vedra and her sister island of Es Vedranella from a range of different angles, including the finest of them all - from the top of the Torre de Savinar pirate tower.
You will find the start by turning left at a bend to the right in the asphalt road from Es Cubells to Cala d'Hort almost as soon as Es Vedra comes into view to your left (photo 1).
Find somewhere safe to park and follow the camino straight on past a big house on the right and a vineyard, till you reach a fence (photo 2). The fence has a gap behind a tree with a sign hanging from its trunk, slightly to your left. The path continues across a recently ploughed field (photo 3 - December 2007) for about 100 metres at which point you will find a narrow path off to your left (photo 4). Just out of sight, a few metres up the path, you will find this tiny natural pond to your left (photo 5).
The path soon levels out to as it follows the line of the mountain heading all the time towards Es Vedra. The view behind you is spectacular too (photo 6).
Soon you reach a fork with a blue arrow pointing in both directions (photo 7). Follow it to the left and the Torre de Savinar pirate tower is before you, accompanied by the two islands (photo 8).
The door to the tower is open and you can climb into the circular room (photo 9). From there a spiral staircase takes you up to the observation platform, where the views are unmatched (photo 10) (photo 11) (photo 12) (photo 13). You may notice your compass misbehaving while you're on the tower as Es Vedra is apparently the 3rd most magnetic place on the planet. Our GPS device suddenly took off while we were there, showing us to be accelerating up to the phenomenal speed of 380 m.p.h! Nonetheless, it is hard to draw yourself away from the tower...
When you finally do, you should retrace your steps to the fork with the blue arrows pointing both ways (photo 14). This time head downhill towards a rocky plateau that ends at the cliffs (photo 15). The views from the cliff edge are stunning (photo 16). We carry on across the plateau and another blue marker directs us off the plateau and steeply down through woodland (photo 17), until we reach a camino from which a sign points out the path that we have just come down from the tower (photo 18).
We follow the camino till it reaches a T-junction (photo 19) at which we turn right and head uphill (photo 20). This leads us back to the fence (photo 21) from which we set off earlier, up to the tower.
